First Written Use of English in Nigeria

The first known written use of English in Nigeria is Equiano’s Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, the African. The autobiography was published in 1789 as an account of the European slave trade [Blackburn, 2010].
